The tour begins with « the heart of Paris » : on the Ile de la Cité where you will learn more about Notre Dame cathedral and the world’s best-known flying buttresses, the Sainte Chapelle with the intensity of the magnificent stained-glass windows, la Conciergerie where the ghosts of the guillotine’s victims must surely haunt this stark and gloomy place. Visit the left bank, the Latin quarter where students stroll around in the old and tiny streets such as “la rue du Chat qui Pêche” (the street of the fishing cat), and pass by la Sorbonne, one of the most famous universities in Europe. Cross the river to reach le Marais area, one of the oldest districts in Paris, admire the beautiful 17th century mansions and of course the stunning place des Vosges. You may visit the musée Carnavalet or experience some of the trendiest new designers’ shops on rue des Francs Bourgeois . Then continue along Rivoli street to the Tuileries gardens and the world famous museum: le Louvre. Turn right onto Vendôme square; rue de la Paix and the most famous jewellers
In the world, reach the Opera square with magnificent Garnier, emblematic of the monumental architecture of the 2nd Empire. Pass by the Madeleine church, on rue Royale and fall right into the Concorde square where the terrifying guillotine stood during the French Revolution and where the obelisk from Luxor, Egypt stands, nowadays,. Go along the Champs Elysées one of the most beautiful avenues in the world and turn around the Arc de Triomphe erected by order of Napoleon the 1st as a tribute to the glory of his “Grand Army”. Cross the river Seine again and meet “the grand old lady of Paris” : The Eiffel Tower, coming back along the bank, the Invalids and the dome of Napoleon’s tomb, the beautiful Alexander the 3rd bridge with its so romantic lampposts. Orsay: Originally designed for the 1900 World’s Fair as the terminus of the city of Orleans railway station, and after escaping a demolition in the 70’s, the building reopened its doors in 1986 as the Musée d’Orsay. Another refurbishment was done in 2012. The collections occupy three levels covering works from the mid and late 19th century, the Art Nouveau decorative art, a range of paintings and sculptures from the second half of the 19th century and of course the outstanding collection of Impressionists (Monet, Renoir, Manet, Van Gogh, Degas, Cezanne) and Neoimpressionists art (Seurat, Lautrec, Gauguin).
Pompidou: Right between the Chatelet and the Marais districts, the Pompidou center is a multicultural museum created in the 70’s. Visit this incredible building, a piece of art in itself, and witness one of the most important collections of modern and contemporary art in Europe.
